Case Study2: Using KANDLE in
the Windsor High Sports College Golf Academy
What does the Academy involve?
Windsor Sports College Academy was established in the summer
term 2003 to provide opportunities for all pupils from Windsor
High School who had participated in golf in PE lessons to
continue playing golf outside of the school environment.
Partnerships between Windsor High School and local Golf
Clubs
As a specialist Sports College, Windsor High School has
responsibility for establishing relationships with local
sports club. Within Golf this relationship involves 2 local
golf clubs – Halesowen GC and Hagley Golf & country
club. Jon Nicholas from Halesowen GC attended initial KANDLE
training at Windsor High School in May 2003.
Use of technology within the teaching of golf
Technology in the form of video analysis has been used quite
extensively within golf coaching during the last 10 years.
This has usually consisted of state of the art analysis suites,
available only at premier golf facilities, or very basic
video recording and playback service offered by the majority
of golf professionals.
In order to maximise the use of KANDLE to support the delivery
of W.H.S golf programme models of good performance in golf
for all facets of the sport delivered via our PE curriculum
were required. This footage was not initially available to
this extent therefore we needed to create it. Filming took
place at Halesowen GC with Jon Nicholas. Footage of the correct
performance of techniques of putting, short and long game
was recorded in line with requirements of WHS KS3 scheme
of work for golf
KANDLE in action!
Video footage was taken of all academy members during coaching
sessions over the summer holidays. Jon Nicholas and the school’s
sport development office, Chris Jew then edited this footage
and compared pupils performance against models of good practice.
Academy members were involved in a video analysis session
as part of their autumn term academy event programme. The
KANDLE software was utilised to highlight areas of good performance
and areas of improvement in individual performers. The text
box option was used to record comments for each member and
then this action shot saved as a picture file allowing each
member to receive a print out of themselves plus highlighted
areas for improvement. All pupils found this feedback extremely
useful, not to mention great fun!

Future developments
The KANDLE systems will now be used to support the delivery
of golf within the curriculum and will provide an extremely
useful method of pupil feedback and self-assessment (particularly
on wet weather occasions). It will also be used with higher
level performers through the Golf Academy and will be further
supported by Jon Nicholas who was so impressed with the KANDLE
system that he has purchased the equipment and software to
be used in all his teaching of golf.
